Day out on the Long Walk, and a flat tyre (April 17)

Everything started out as planned.  We packed a lunch and our gear in the stroller, and took off down the long walk for a trip to Runnymede.  It was to be a beautiful Saturday walk of about 9-10 miles with a break for lunch part-way, but alas, it was not to be....

We made it about 1.5 miles into the journey when I realized that the stroller was pulling to the right and becoming harder to push.  I looked down and saw a nice, shiny tack protruding from the tire (or 'tyre' as they call it on this side of the puddle).

We pulled over and decided to have an early lunch, rest a bit, and explore a corner of the Long Walk which we had never explored before :)

The stop was quite pleasant, but we still had to make it home with 3 tired kids, a bunch of gear and a stroller with only one good rear tire.  Fortunately, Daddy figured out how to lash the stroller tire onto one of the boys scooters (think of it as a tow-truck for a stroller :)  ), and we were able to hobble home.

Gladly, the view was beautiful on the return!

Once at home, we visited the bike shop around the corner, and purchased a tire patching kit, which (after helping to fix the issue at hand) is now a permanent piece of equipment in the diaper bag!

The Guards of Windsor Castle (April 15)

Here are the retiring guards, who were just replaced by a fresh platoon.

There go the guards, out of the castle!

Here is Flat Josh in front of the Round Tower in the middle of Windsor Castle. This was, originally, the safest place to be in the castle if it was being attacked! You can see how it is built high up on a hill, with a dry moat all around the base that is a beautiful garden these days. Next to Josh is a new friend he met, a royal knight jumping jack (just made by Josh's friend John, who is holding up Flat Josh).

Ah yes, a visit to the castle is not complete without getting your picture taken with a guard!

Flat Josh, Flat Josh, where have you been? I've been to Windsor to look at the Queen!

The Spead family really enjoyed their visitor, Flat Josh, and they are glad he came to stay with them!

Windsor Castle and a Marching Band (April 15)

Here is Flat Josh on the Eton Bridge once more, this time looking towards the castle - do you see it right behind his head, with a flag waving?

On to Windsor Castle! Since the Queen was at home in the castle, the Changing of the Guard took place in the private inner courtyard. Flat Josh could still see pretty well through the "Henry VIII" Gate.

Flat Josh got to see the action up close as the band which accompanied the guards marched back out of the castle on its way back to the barracks!

Windsor on the River Thames (April 15)

One of our friends named Josh sent us a boy named Flat Josh.  This is about a boy who becomes flat and has some very different adventures because of his unusual shape.  He was mailed to Windsor, UK (England - just West of London) and lived with the Spead family for two weeks.

Mr. Spead walks to work each morning.  He walks one mile through Windsor, over the River Thames (pronounced "Tems"), and into Eton.  One morning, Flat Josh walked Mr. Spead to work.  This is a picture of Flat Josh going over the bridge which spans the River Thames.

Here are some of the Swans who live on the river.  They are Mute Swans, and were traditionally owned by the Queen of England!

Here is another picture of Flat Josh, enjoying a sunny spring day next to the River Thames.

And here is a picture of what the bridge looks like!  You can see some boat houses in the background, too.

Happy Easter Everyone!

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!!
It was wonderful celebrating Easter with Nanny and Granddad Spead. We had a full English Breakfast, and then attended the service at All Saints Church in Windsor before they caught their taxi to the airport.

We tried to take a family Easter picture before they left, but it didn't quite go as planned. This picture is about the best one that was snapped:

Blythe absolutely loved wearing her Easter dress which was a gift from Nanna Light.

After Nanny and Granddad left, Daddy hid the Easter Eggs in the back garden, and the kids really enjoyed finding them.

It really was a wonderful day which we thoroughly enjoyed spending together, celebrating the resurrection of our Savior.
